#MMBBR Travelling Seeds (MUMMY NATURE children's book series - 3) by Rebecca Bielawski @booksbeck

BOOK 3 in the MUMMY NATURE series of children's books

Discover how seeds travel from place to place. Our narrator excitedly tells us how she saw a pear fall from a tree in the meadow and how a cow came along and ate it. Then the seed began a journey. Where would the seed end up? Would it grow into a big tree with pears of its own?

Using the pear and cow example we can stimulate more questions about seed dispersal and, like all the books in MUMMY NATURE series, Travelling Seeds can be used as a jumping off point for discussion of other topics such as seed germination, plant parts or how plants animals and people interact in nature. On the last page we can see more examples of ways that seeds can be spread.

What we can learn:
How seeds of fruit can be spread when eaten by animals or people
Other ways that seeds can be spread: by wind, by water, by sticking to travelling creatures
Simple ideas about germination
The cycle of: seed > plant > flower > fruit > seed
A cow stomach has 4 parts

Germination, sprout, roots, seedling

MUMMY NATURE series – nurturing children's curiosity

Each book in the series is one mini nature lesson wrapped up in colour and rhyme. These books are intended for very young children including toddlers and will give them just a glimpse into some of the wonders of the natural world. Illustrated for maximum vibrancy and visual impact, using rhyme to engage young minds and encourage participation. Read the rhymes to your children and soon they will be reading them to you!

The narrator is a small child and keen observer who tells us in short rhyming phrases everything she thinks we should know, and all about the magical things she sees around her. Sometimes she is camouflaged in the long grass and other times she has to climb a tree to get a better look.

Rebecca Bielawski

Once upon a time in England there was a Kiwi girl. She was unsatisfied with her job peeling onions at a factory in Norfolk and yearned for a better life were she could harness her untapped artistic potential and unleash all her pent up rhymes. One day when she realized she had no tears left to cry for the onions she packed up and moved to Spain, fell in love with a handsome Systems Administrator, had two kids, became a children's author and lived happily ever after.

Q.  What inspires your writing?

A.  My kids provide an endless source of material for picture books.  The
way they react to different things lets me know what is important in their
world and those things become important to my books too.

Q.  What is your favorite thing about being a writer?

A.  I love the flexible timetable.  It's also very creative, but not in an
exhausting way, as some creative professions can be. It's really as intense or
laid back as you want it to be.

Q.  What is the toughest part of being a writer?

 A.  The administrative side is hard, book listings, advertising, networking
all require a lot of screen time.  It's not my favourite thing to do.

Q.  If you could not be writer, what would you do/be?

A.  Microbiologist, Nutritionist, or Interpreter
Q.  What would the story of your life be entitled?

A. Why didn't I think of this earlier?

Q.  What is your favorite book of all time?

A. Too many to choose, but they are ALL picture books. Grown-up books make
me sleepy (and there are no pictures!)

Q.  Which character from ANY book are you most like?

A.  Maybe Charlie, from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Q.  What character from all of your book are you most like?

A.  I'm a lot like one of my friendly bacteria from MEET BACTERIA!

Q.  Which book would you love to take a weekend vacation inside of?

A.  Where is Little Kiwi?  I just want to crawl in there and snuggle down
under a tree in the New Zealand native forest.

Q.  What is your favorite season?

A. Back home in New Zelanad I loved summertime, but summer here in Spain is
unbearably hot.  I'll take autumn, September is the best.

Q.  What inspired your book cover(s)?  Or what is your favorite book cover
 and why?

A . I like the Fidgety Itch, Ferninand and covers illustrated by Axel
Scheffler, to name a few. I like what I like but I suppose in general I'm
attracted to covers with strong illustrations.

Q.  Tell me something funny that happened while on a book tour or while
promoting your book.

A. Never done one, you see I'm in a bit of a pickle because I write in
English but live in a country where no one speaks it.  Read alouds of my books
are complicated, not impossible, but complicated.

Q.  Are you working on something new?

A.  I have to translate the MUMMY NATURE series into Spanish then I have two
little hot potatoes waiting to be written.  One will be mixed media, the other
watercolour.  Can't wait!

Q.  Anything you want to say to followers of this blog or those that are just stopping by?

A.  Thanks to Emily for having me, and thanks to her readers for their
awesome support! - Rebecca B.
